Abstract

Garut sheep is one of the indigenous sheep breeds of Indonesia with great potential as a source of animal protein. However, accurate measurement of body weight is often limited by the lack of access to livestock weighing equipment. Therefore, this study aims to develop a body weight estimation model based on body morphometric measurements in Garut sheep. This study involved 240 Garut sheep, consisting of 120 males and 120 females, divided into six age groups: 0-8 months, 9-16 months, 17-24 months, 25-32 months, 33-40 months, and 41-48 months. The research was conducted on July 15, 2024, at the Center for the Development of Sheep and Goat Breeding (UPTD BPPTDK) in Margawati, Garut. The measured morphometric parameters included chest girth (CG), shoulder height (SH), and body length (BL). Data were analyzed using the PROC Stepwise method (SPSS.26). The results showed variations in body measurements across age groups, with chest girth being the most influential parameter on body weight. The best regression equation involved a combination of chest girth, body length, and shoulder height as predictors. In general, the resulting regression model can serve as a practical tool to estimate the body weight of Garut sheep and assist in decision-making for selection and management practices.
